Information for Prospective New Scouts

How old does my son need to be?

To be eligible, a boy must be 11 years old, or have completed the fifth grade or earned the Arrow of Light Award and be at least 10 years old.  A boy must not yet be 18 years old.

How does he join the Troop?

There is no requirement to have previous scouting experience,. Anyone who meets the eligibility requirements can come to a Troop 190 meeting for more information and to join.  For those who are Cub Scouts, representatives from Troop 190 offer to attend Webelos bridging ceremonies for those Dens who give advance notice of boys intending to join Troop 190.

Upon joining, the following will need to be completed and reviewed:

• Boy Scout Application, to be returned along with the registration fee to Membership Chair, Jan Jenssen, as quickly as possible.

• BSA Medical Form (Parts A & B), to be returned to Jan Jenssen as soon as possible. It is valid for 12 months and, therefore, must be updated annually.  It is required for all Scouts and Adult Leaders before they can participate in any campouts, including those more than 72 hours in length. Part A & B of this form contain insurance, physician, and emergency contact information. It does not require a physical exam by a doctor.  Some Troop activities/trips like summer camp, 50 milers, any high adventure trip require Part C of the medical form.  Part C does require a physical exam by a physician or P.A. and their signature on the form.

What does it cost?

The $25 fee is set by BSA. This chartering fee is paid annually in September or is prorated per month, when joining. The fee include chartering fee and BSA insurance, Boys Life magazine is optional for an additional $12 annual fee. These fees can be earned through various fundraisers the Troop holds throughout the year.  We use fundraisers to cover the majority of the Troop's annual operating expenses and give the boys an opportunity to earn money for their individual scout account.

Breakdown:

BSA Fee             $25

Boy's Life           $12 (Optional)

Total                  $37
